Not satisfied with the power your stock Android OS gives you over your phone? Looking to install a custom ROM that is better than the stock ROM you get with your phone? Installing LineageOS is the way to go.
What is LineageOS?
The predecessor of LineageOS was created by one of the best and most popular custom discs, CyanogenMod. Officially launched on December 24, 2016, the OS supports almost 180+ devices (at the time of writing) and is growing rapidly. LineageOS is one of the best and most widely supported custom ROMs made for Android devices. Millions of users Latest Mailing Database worldwide have found that installing LineageOS on their devices gives them a better and smoother experience than the ROMs provided by the company.
If you want to install LineageOS, please visit the LineageOS wiki to know if your device supports it or not. If not, wait until they release the official version for your device. For every other device on the list, here's a guide on how to install LineageOS on your device using a custom recovery called TWRP Recovery.
Prerequisites to install LineageOS:
Backup and sync all data and media in the device, stored on internal and external storage devices. Some data may be lost in the process.
Charge the device with a good 80-90% before starting.
Make sure the device is rooted and has TWRP installed, if that doesn't work: How to install TWRP on an Android device.
Download the LineageOS ROM you want to flash on the device and make sure it is stored in the internal storage.
Download the GAPPS package for LineageOS (depending on your architecture, which can be seen by using an app such as CPU-Z) and place it in ROM in internal storage. (This custom ROM doesn't come pre-installed with an array of Google apps like Gmail, Play Store, Google Music, YouTube, etc. So the GAPPS package has a manual flash to get those packages.)
Now that you are all set, let's first how to install LineageOS on your device.
How to revert to installing LineageOS using TWRP
Boot into on-device recovery mode using volume down button + power button to restart the device (this may be different on some devices).
Some custom discs require a factory reset. Select "Erase" in the main menu and continue with the "Swipe to Erase" button at the bottom of the screen.
Go back to the main menu, go to the "Install" window, select the LineageOS.zip file, and continue with the "Slide to Confirm Flash" button at the bottom. It will take some time to install.
Once the ROM has been successfully flashed to the device, you will see a "Wipe Cache/Dalvik" option, select it and return to the main menu.
Go to the "Install" window, select the Gapps.zip file, and continue with the "Swipe to Confirm Flash" button at the bottom. It will also take some time to install.
Once this has been flashed to the device, you will be able to proceed with the "wipe cache/dalvik" option in order to proceed as before.
Now press the "Reboot System" button, which will reboot the device with the new OS you just installed.
The first boot takes a certain amount of time and should not be interrupted. When it finally boots it boots into LineageOS, which is successfully installed on the device. You can start exploring and learning what this LineageOS is, and also enjoy the new powers you unlock with it now.
